LOLOLOL omg.
{For those playing along at home, this is the post in question, and the article anon mentioned}
Thanks for letting me know, anon! :D
From just a skim through that section, it looks like it’s in good company~ I’ll have to give the whole article a read.
SOMEDAY y’all will circulate me being eloquent, sans snark.I lie, I don’t think I criticize sans snark.
-prozacpark (More on fandom and slash, this time with stats and numbers.)
someone saying what i said here/here but way better than I did.
(via missturdle)
Guess.
I am tired of all these Marvel/Avenger’s White dudebro slash pairings on my dash.
Yes. It’s true fax.
Hmm, let me justify that. And narrow it down.
It’s not the slashing in general I dislike at all. It’s the pairings I…
Shaming people for not liking a ship: not cool.
Shaming people for liking a popular ship instead: not cool.
Justifying ship wars by calling the other side racist/sexist/homophobic/whatever: fucking shameful.
Look, I’m not saying there’s not racism in fandom. Not at all. I’m not saying the reason Tony/Rhodey isn’t more popular isn’t system racism—it’s certainly one of the factors. But when you start off a great ship manifesto by pointing to fans of other pairings and saying, “I AM SICK OF YOUR PAIRING BECAUSE IT’S RACIST,” you are making fandom a shittier place to be. You are using social justice to make people feel shameful for liking a ship because it’s not the one you like better. And this attitude is what makes me, and other people, stay away from social justice we believe in: because it’s used to suck all the enjoyment out of fandom so you can get a fucking cookie for shipping a more “socially conscious” pairing.
1) This is a tongue in cheek post pointing out fandoms’ knack for sidelining PoCs.
(Had this been a true “great ship manifesto”, I would probably be inclined to agree with you more. But alas, it is not. To that end, I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t name my srsbznz manifesto “Psst. Hey guys. Hey, guess what?” It just doesn’t roll off the tongue, if you ask me.)
2) Not liking Starkey certainly does not make you a racist.
3) Racism and sexism and all sorts of other delicious isms certainly exist in the fandom; I’m glad we agree.
4) If my intention was to “call out” I would have tagged it differently. (Think: “Captain America” “Steve” “Star Spangled Banner.”) But you’re right, this could be read as ~inciting a shipping war~, and for that angle, I do apologize.
5)

Yeaaaaah. Realistically, if a post (any post) is all it would take to make you give up on the ~*social justice you believe in*~ you’re probably not a very good ally. I’m sorry my harshin your squee was all it took to push you away from SJ, I suppose? That’s clearly my bad. (Why is “socially conscious” pairing in quotation marks? I don’t recall ever saying that phrase in my post.)
Frankly, I am allowed to dislike seeing people who look like me erased in shipping. Your point seems to be: racism exists and racism plays into why this ship is erased in the fandom but fandom is supposed to be fun and pointing out racism isn’t fun! In fact, it’s mean! Therefore, this post is FUCKING SHAMEFULLLL. So I’m not quite sure how I’m supposed to respond to that. vOv
6) The fact that this post got popular -and therefore spread about to people who object- means I’ll have to explain myself more, but it certainly doesn’t mean I plan to apologize for it. Again, this is a tongue in cheek post.
(And let’s be real, here. I even ended with “TL;DR: The erasure of characters of color in the slash-shipping circles is gross and should stop.” I don’t know how else I could have spelled that out, folks.)
**Once more: this has been a tongue in cheek post.
For a more critical look at the isms of slash shipping, I can point you here or here.
ETA: 12/12/12 - And here.

Probably one of the greatest performances I have ever seen. RIP Michael Jackson.

Yes. It’s true fax.
Hmm, let me justify that. And narrow it down.
It’s not the slashing in general I dislike at all. It’s the pairings I keep seeing.
All the White ones.
The misogyny that tends to crop up in the slashing fandom is one thing (and oh, what a gross and pervasive thing it is) but in addition, I’m seeing this NO INTERRACIAL COUPLES NOPE NOT EVER trend.
Fandom.
Fandom look at your life. Look at your (slashing) choices.
Specifically in regards to Tony.
Tony Stark came with pre-established shipping fodder, yet everyone wants to mash his face together with Steve’s?
What about Rhodey?
You know, Rhodey?
Tony’s best friend?
Sometimes takes on the role of War Machine?
Tony called him “Honey Bear”, once?
The Black guy?
Whoops, that’s probably where I lost y’all.
Like, I am utterly fucking inundated see a lot of White!Avenger & Co. ships (Tony and Steve! Tony and Thor! Tony and Bruce! Tony and Clint! Tony and Loki ffs) but Dash, there is an unacceptable lack of all things Tony/Rhodey. Where is the shipping? Where is the art? The fics? The posts?
DO YOU KNOW HOW FUCKING FAR INTO THE TAGS I HAD TO DIG TO FIND ANYTHING?
TOO FAR, CONSIDERING THE AMOUNT OF OPPURTUNITY YOU’RE PRESENTED WITH IN CANON:

((sauce))
just

they’re so

and I mean guys c’mon

guys.

GUYS.

GUYS. SRSLY.
HOW DO I NEVER SEE THIS SHIPPED?
TL;DR: The erasure of characters of color in the slash-shipping circles is gross and should stop.
