A’lam; Pathos - An emotional appeal.
Uasir; Ethos - The power of credibility.
Cava; Logos - A slice of Logic.(Notes from the character bible draft 1.)
If you’re not following the Penumbra blog, you better hop to it.
I am kind of excited by how well these concepts translate to the characters.

Penumbra official running gag! I’m sure a lot of people are familiar with the infamous tortilla rip that occurs every so often…
As Cava says, it’s not every so often for Uasir. It’s every time.
Lol.
LOL

The thing with Penumbra is that when you look at it… You notice that there are girls everywhere. Girls, girls, girls, girls, girls - and it’s unusual, y’know? In a sense that we’re so used to seeing concepts being driven by boys, boys, boys, we can’t really grasp the idea of having that one boy outnumbered by this cast of female characters.
Drawing this, I questioned it. What will people think? What will people say? I didn’t consciously make the decision to usher these blank slates into fitted female-shells, so it’s like when people go “Where are the dudes?” where does that leave me? It just happened that way. There’s not reason behind it. Cava, Yana, and A’lam are just… girls. I don’t think I’ve ever seen or thought of them as boys.
I mean, it’s usually the other way around, isn’t it?…I agree with the original comment too. For the most part, in American media we don’t often see trios+ comprised of two girls and a guy.
And bolded so I can go in on yet another reason why I love all that is Penumbra: truth is, when we do see stories where the guy is outnumbered by ladies, it’s usually under harem circumstances.
That isn’t the case with Penumbra, and tbh I’m pretty excited to see what kind of alternative dynamics come about as a result.
(And let’s face it, we totally need more creators that just-so-happen to create female characters in the media-sphere. Break that status quo, gal! :D)
And just adding a bit here, because Gyp and I have srs bzns discussions, but we’re not only looking at “harem-genre” issues, either. When we stick a boy character in an all-girl cast, we get people who can’t necessarily process the different dynamic being presented. It’s usually, “Oh no, poor dude! He lives with a bunch of girls! He’s getting picked on!” etc. Every issue has to come back to the fact that the characters are female. There’s no second-guessing why anyone would get along with anyone else. People don’t like to take into account a character’s age or a character’s history. It gets problematic, especially when you’re just trying to convey a believable person.
We’re bombarded so frequently by male-dominated casts that executives wouldn’t even think twice about telling us to “tone it down, there’s too many girls.” This is partially the reason we’re putting this online, though. So we can get people involved and so eventually, when we get there, the execs can go, “this might actually work, let’s try it.”
I have a lot of feels about this, guys. I want this project to succeed and it’s so hard because “The Biz” makes it so impossible to get anywhere

Some hair studies for Cava. :P Pretty fun to do. The challenge was to keep her headband integrated, which… wasn’t hard. xD
HEY. HEY LOOK, EVERYONE.

A posse of wiseguys - or something like that. Uasir, Cava, and A’lam are the main trio of Penumbra. You oughta’ remember their names ;D
A’lam and her friggin’ gold tooth, okay?
