There has been Jasmine and Belle, Mulan and Pocahontas, but never before has there been a Latina Disney princess. Until now.

Some may say that Sofia doesn’t look very Latina and others might say Hispanics come in all shades, but Disney says she is.
During a recent press tour, one blogger pointed out that in concept art, Sofia’s mother, Miranda, the newly crowned queen of Enchancia, had a darker complexion than the other characters, according to Entertainment Weekly. “She is Latina,” executive producer Jamie Mitchell said of the character, acknowledging that this makes Sofia the first Latina princess to appear in a Disney animation project.
Things I like about this:
She’s latin@ and it’s no big deal, she’s not wearing a sombrero and poncho, she’s not sitting there with Cheech Marin (I love you Cheech actually) as a sidekick…BUT she’s latin@ and pale and if nobody said out loud “She’s Latin@” then she would never have rocked the boat as “Disney’s First Latina Princess.”

And fuck it, they’ve said the mother is darker, but this is Disney, if she survives she ain’t getting shit for screen time. Disney practically created the idea that the Electra Complex is not only normal and natural but desirable.
I mean, I am willing to accept that many Latin@s are white passing. I have white passing Latin@ relatives, actually.
But the point is this:
If you want to talk about diversifying a VISUAL MEDIUM, you have to MAKE IT VISUALLY DIVERSE.
The point that stands that “we wouldn’t know she was Latin@ unless some disney exec pointed it out” is INCREDIBLY VALID.
This is what I mean, racist apologists:
You simply cannot have your cake and eat it too.
The point of making a racially diverse Disney Princess is to provide a role model and heroine for young girls of color who DO NOT HAVE A ROLE MODEL THAT LOOKS LIKE THEM.

I mean, I’m thinking back to my childhood (and I grew up in the 90s, and reached puberty right as Mulan came out so…) and being told that I couldn’t really be a Disney Princess on the playground because I didn’t look like one, or if I could, it had to be Jasmine (and like, really? I hated Jasmine. She was so whiny. Also, can you say “All Asians look alike” or what?). Little girls of color NEED dark skinned Disney princesses. PLURAL. THEY NEED a character who isn’t turned into a frog for most of the story, or who actually is based visually on the race she’s supposed to be (I’m side-eying you, Pocahontas wtf), or who isn’t some weird amalgamation of every wrong stereotype ever (*cough Mulan and Esmeralda cough*).
They need someone that does what Belle did for nerdy white girls, or what Ariel did for angst and curiosity-ridden white girls, or what Cinderella did for white girls who first dreamed of their prince Charming.
I mean basically what I am saying is that there is such extreme alienation based on visual representation that if you want to actually fix the problem, I’d like to see some actually correct visual representation. And I don’t mean “correct in the loosest sense of the word, we wanted her to look white but we could get away with that because LATIN@!!” I mean, “yeah we realized we were leaving many little girls out of the loop and we want to fix that.”
In other words, Disney, stop trying to get away with shit and actually fix the shit that everyone has been calling you out on.
