Why didn’t anyone make this sooner? I hate when people only use the word “said” in stories.

THANK YOU

A on my hw tonight, here i come!

‘“What a Grenadier!” ejaculated Javert’Les Misérables, Victor Hugo

That said (haha see what I did there) there’s nothing wrong with the word said. And sometimes, that’s all you need.

I just need all of this on my blog. Poor Javert…

No.

NO.

You do not need any word other than said, except in rare cases where you need to communicate something in the tag that you cannot in the dialogue itself. Otherwise, it’s redundant

Using the above words does communicate stronger emotion but yeah, said is often quite sufficient…

Right, I mean, it depends on the word used.

“Hello,” Bob said.

and:

“Hello,” Bob shouted.

portray something different but

“Hello,” Bob said.

and:

“Hello,” Bob uttered.

mean the same thing.

Basically: If the word you are using is just a synonym for said, don’t bother using anything but said.

Yeaaaaah.

This list is awesome, but a lot of these come off as far more action-oriented than said (which is generally neutral) would read.
